What makes a Disciple

Paul said that the church is one body with many members. It is our belief that just as individuals must join together to become that body (the church), churches also combine to support the whole body of Christ - in Pittsfield as well as in Asia. Through the members of this great body we support missions around the globe, bringing clothes and blankets to those who have lost everything in a tornado, feeding hungry people where crops have been washed away, providing water to drought stricken communities, and caring for the poor who cannot provide for themselves. We fund colleges and seminaries, children's homes and retirement centers, and much much more.

SHORT BACKGROUND

First Christian is a church of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), an international denomination. We are proud of our connections to this body and what it allows our local church to accomplish across the globe. Our church was founded in Pittsfield in 1836 and has since been a place where people come to worship God, learn of God's Word in scripture, offer prayer for the community and join in fellowship. Our church seats 200 comfortably and we average a total attendance on Sunday of 200 between our 2 services.

CROSSROADS CENTER

As a means of furthering its mission to worship God, proclaim Jesus Christ, and serve the community, First Christian Church purchased an 18,000 square feet building located across the street from our church in December of 2002. The interior of the building has been extensively remodeled and is totally handicap accessible. The gym was restored with a high school size maple floor with basketball goals, volleyball nets, and walking track around the perimeter. The opposite side of the building contains a dining room which seats 250, a large kitchen with storage area, a laundry room, and a conference room. The upstairs is dedicated to our youth and has two classrooms as well as a recreation and kitchenette area.

CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH MEMORIAL PARK

On August 19, 2003, the Congregational Church trustees deeded their property at the northeast corner of Adams and Memorial Streets to the First Christian Church. On September 15, 2003, the church was decommissioned and torn down. Construction will begin very soon. Donations towards this park may be sent to First Christian Church with a check made out to the Congregational Church Park fund.
